Does my dog need a settle mat?
Every dog benefits from having a familiar and safe place to chill out. Dogs follow us everywhere – often to places where calm behavior is expected. When taught properly, a settle mat shows your dog a safe place to settle down, helping them react less to the environment.
How do I teach my dog to settle on a mat?
Start practicing settling behavior in an environment with few distractions, like at home.
- Place the mat on the floor and reward your dog for showing interest in it. Always toss treats onto the mat to naturally guide your dog onto it.
- Reward your dog gradually: first for sniffing or touching the mat, then for standing on it with all four paws, then for sitting, and finally for lying down.
- Build duration by encouraging your dog to spend longer periods on the mat. You can offer a long-lasting treats, such as a chew or a treat-filled toy.
- Add a cue word, such as “settle”, whenever you place the mat on the floor. Over time, your dog will learn to associate the cue with relaxing on the mat.
Once your dog understands the behavior at home, gradually increase distractions and duration. Keep training sessions short, especially with puppies.
