How to Care for Your Pomppa

With proper care, the life of your Pomppa can be extended by years. Here are our best tips for caring for your Pomppa items!
Drying
Pomppa is a dog’s best friend, especially on a rainy day. After use, a wet jacket should always be dried thoroughly. So instead of folding the jacket into a closet or leaving it on the floor to dry, hang it up and let it dry in a well-ventilated space, preferably outdoors. This prevents the jacket from wrinkling and developing any unwanted odors.

Machine wash
Avoiding any unnecessary washing is recommended. In addition to high water consumption, washing also wears out the technical properties of the coat, like the fabric’s waterproof membrane and the water-repellent coating. Washing the product properly can significantly extend its life.
Prepare for washing
Remove lint and loose dirt with a clothes brush. Loosen any drawstrings, and fasten the buttons and zippers on coats to prevent damage to the fabric. Turn fleece items inside out to protect the fabric from wearing out.
Always check the care label for washing instructions. Most Pomppa products should be washed on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees. The maximum spin speed for jackets is 400 rpm, and for fleece shirts, 800 rpm.
You can wash Pomppa coats with other clothes, but it’s best to wash them with items of similar colors. Washing them in a laundry bag helps prevent wear on the coats and protects your washing machine.
Choose mild detergent
Dog’s have a strong sense of smell and sensitive skin, so choose a fragrance-free, mild and environmentally friendly product.
We recommend using a liquid detergent. The liquid detergent washes off easily thus maintaining the product’s breathability and water resistance.
We do not recommend using fabric softener. Neutralize any possible odors using vinegar or unscented laundry vinegar with a dosage of 0,5-1 tbsp per coat. Use the vinegar as a detergent: add the appropriate amount into the detergent compartment.
After washing
Let the products dry by either hanging it or leaving it on a drying rack. Do not hang coats by their drawstrings, as they may stretch and break.
You can dry the clothes indoors or outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight.
Turning winter coats inside out helps them dry faster.
After each wash, we recommend reactivating the coat’s water-repellent coating. See instruction below.
Tip!
Before putting your dog’s coats into storage, it’s important to clean them thoroughly so that stains and odors don’t set in while they’re stored. A clean and well-maintained Pomppa is a joy to bring back into use after storage!
Reactivating the water repellency
The shell fabric of Pomppa coats (Kuori, Sportti, Sade, Kevyt, Perus and Toppa) is finished with a DWR treatment, which keeps the fabric water-repellent. The water-repellent treatment wears off over time as the product is used and washed. To keep the coat waterproof, the treatment should be reapplied regularly.

After each machine wash, the DWR treatment on the coats must be reactivated through heat treatment. This is done by evenly heating the dry product using one of the following methods:
- Tumble dryer or drying cabinet: 30 °C / 3–5 min
- Sauna: 40 °C / 3–5 min
- Hair dryer: 30 °C / 3–5 min from a distance of 20 cm
- Sunlight: 15 min (the fabric’s surface temperature should rise to 30 °C)
Please note that excessive heat can damage the jacket’s waterproof membrane, rendering the product no longer waterproof. Therefore, please follow the instructions carefully.
The DWR treatment also wears off over time. The product should be re-treated after water no longer beads up on the surface. The water-repellency can be restored using waterproofing sprays available at outdoor supply stores. Always follow the instructions found on the coating product’s label.
Note that the water-repellency does not affect the fabric’s water resistance. If the fabric gets saturated with water, the coat is still waterproof, but only the moisture doesn’t evaporate through the fabric as effectively anymore.

If the odors are hard to get rid of, insert the product in a plastic bag and place it in a freezer for a few hours. This should eliminate the odor-causing bacteria. If the odours are truly stuck to the product, you can wash it in the washing machine and use white vinegar as a fabric softener.

Tip!
Sand and mud can wear down the zippers on Polar- and SporttiPomppa products. We recommend maintaining the zippers regularly by brushing them clean with a clothing brush after a muddy run.

Recycling
Before you decide to throw away a broken or worn out product, check first if it’s repairable. If you have a product that’s no longer in your use, we recommend passing on or selling it to another dog. This way Pomppa brings joy to the next owner as well!

Why don’t you recommend using fabric softener?
Fabric softener has a negative impact on the environment; it also wears down the materials in the clothes and affects their durability.
If the item has a stubborn odor, you can neutralize it by using vinegar or naturally scented laundry vinegar at a dosage of 0.5–1 tablespoon per jacket. Use the vinegar just as you would fabric softener: pour the appropriate amount into the fabric softener compartment.
How can I prevent odors from setting in?
Over time, your dog’s gear can develop unpleasant odors. Natural oils from your dog’s coat, combined with dirt and debris picked up outdoors, can become trapped in the fabric and cause a musty smell.
Regular washing helps prevent odors from developing while keeping the gear in good condition. It’s a good idea to wash and dry your dog’s clothing thoroughly before storing it, even if it doesn’t appear dirty. This helps keep the gear fresh, clean, and ready to use whenever you need it.
Can the Pomppa be washed by hand?
Yes! Machine washing always wears out the garment, so it’s recommended to hand-wash individual stains on the item.
You can also hand-wash the entire coat. Follow the same instructions as for machine washing: choose a mild detergent and use lukewarm water. Use a container that’s large enough so you can turn the garment over in it. Be sure to rinse the garment thoroughly to remove all detergent residue. Gently squeeze out most of the water and hang it up to air dry.
