Which jacket to choose?

Opas koiran takin valintaan

Due to ever-changing weather conditions, choosing the right coat for your dog can be challenging. How to choose a coat that provides protection from the weather and has features that serve your dog's individual needs? In this guide, we share the best tips to help you find a coat that suits your dog’s needs.

The Pomppa collection includes seven different coat options, each designed for different weather conditions and different types of dogs. After going through the following three questions, you can determine the required features your dog’s coat:

1. What type of fur does my dog have?
2. What temperatures is my dog accustomed to?
3. In what kind of weather conditions and activities will the coat be used the most?

Choose the Gear According to the Weather

The Pomppa coat collection has three categories: raincoats, winter coats, and shirts & midlayers. Raincoats protect the dog from rain, wind, and mud all year-round, while winter coats are ideal for both cold and wet weather conditions. Shirts are best suited for cool and dry weather, or as an midlayer insulation under another coat. Compare the features of each Pomppa coat from the following table. Which Coat Is Best For My Dog?

Short-haired or undercoat-less dogs, like many hounds, pointers, water dogs, sighthounds, pinschers, and companion breeds, need extra protection well before temperatures dip below freezing. Also small, slender, elderly dogs and puppies get cold more easily, making a coat essential.
Dogs with thicker fur, like herding dogs, retrievers, and spitzs, generally tolerate challenging weather conditions quite well. While these dogs may not require additional warmth the instant the first leaves fall, it’s still a good idea to have a jacket at hand. The undercoat of a thick-haired dog living indoors may not be able to grow dense enough to withstand the freezing weather and raw winds of the winter. Especially when wet!
Also take into account the level of activity: during fast-paced and heavy exercise the need for additional warmth is always less than during calm and slow movement. Therefore, always remember to observe your dog during outdoor activities or performances and adapt your gear accordingly.
Below, you’ll find a brief introduction to each Pomppa coat. Use the questions presented at the beginning of this post to help you choose the right coat for your dog.

JUMPPAPOMPPA – Highly elastic fleece shirt for training and everyday use
Our best-seller! JumppaPomppa is a warm, soft, and highly flexible shirt with a form-fitting design that conforms to the dog's movement. Ideal for cold and dry weather, it also works as a mid-layer under a coat, providing extra warmth.
For dogs that get cold easily, we recommend JumppaPomppa for year-round use. For dogs with thicker fur, the shirt is best suited for the mid-season and winter months.

SPORTTIPOMPPA – Warm and comfy softshell coat for three-season use
SporttiPomppa protects your dog from heavy rain, wind, and cold. Its sporty fit is perfect for active dogs, and the jacket’s velvety-soft interior is comfortable to wear. Also note the handy zipper closure!
For dogs that get cold easily, we recommend SporttiPomppa from early fall to late spring, but it’s also great for a cool summer rain. For dogs with thicker fur, the coat is best suited for rainy fall and winter seasons.

KUORIPOMPPA – Light shell jacket for rain, wind, and dirt

With technical, breathable fabric, taped seams, and an improved protective design, KuoriPomppa is the perfect raincoat for year-round use. This lightweight, unlined shell coat dries quickly and packs up small, making it easy to take along on every adventure.

KuoriPomppa works as a shell jacket for all seasons. As temperatures drop, add an extra layer like the JumppaPomppa underneath for dogs that get cold easily.

SADEPOMPPA – Light and durable raincoat

SadePomppa is a lightweight and durable raincoat for year-round use. The lining is silky smooth, making it resistant to sticks, debris, and dog hair. With a design simpler than KuoriPomppa, Sadeomppa does not have leg straps or an adjustable collar.

This thin, non-insulated raincoat works as an all-purpose coat for thick-coated dogs and as a great raincoat for warmer weather for dogs that get cold easily.

KEVYTPOMPPA – Durable and warm raincoat for chilly weather

A versatile raincoat with a soft fur lining, KevytPomppa is an ideal choice for spring and fall seasons, providing your dog with protection from rain, wind, mud, and cold.

For dogs that get cold easily, we recommend KevytPomppa from early fall to late spring. For dogs with thicker fur, Kevyt is best suited for fall and winter.

PERUSPOMPPA – Versatile winter coat for the snowy and rainy seasons
A cozy winter coat that keeps your dog warm and protected during the cold season. The durable outer fabric and soft lining make the coat resistant to both cold and rain.

For dogs that get cold easily, we recommend PerusPomppa from fall to spring. For dogs with thicker fur, the coat is ideal for fall and winter.

TOPPAPOMPPA – Insulated winter coat for arctic conditions
ToppaPomppa is a winter coat with insulating padding, making it perfect for the coldest winter days. Its thick teddy lining and generous sizing keep even the most cold-sensitive dogs warm!

For dogs that get cold easily, we recommend ToppaPomppa from late fall to early spring. For dogs with thicker fur, Toppa is best suited for the harsh mid-winter.

What Temperatures Are the Coats Suited For?

The range of temperature below are only indicative and they are meant to help you in comparing Pomppa coats. Just like humans, dogs experience temperature individually. Always consider your dog’s individual needs and the climate they are accustomed to. For example, a dog living in Central Europe will likely feel colder in below zero temperatures compared to a dog accustomed to winters of Finnish Lapland—regardless of coat type!
